Building a camper van that feels like home requires creative solutions and efficient use of space. One essential feature in any van conversion is a multi-functional bench with storage. In this post, we'll guide you through the process of constructing a dinette bench that doubles as a dining area, office space, and cozy seating. This will be part 1 of the process as we still need to build the other seat which will also act as the compartment for the toilet, as well as the table.
This project is perfect for anyone looking to maximize functionality in a small space.
What You’ll Need
Here’s a quick rundown of the tools and materials we used for this project:
Wood: 2x2s for framing and ¾-inch birch plywood for panels.
Hardware: Deckmate 2½-inch screws, Gorilla Wood Glue, and 1 1/4 Kreg pocket hole screws.
Tools: Circular saw, drill, jigsaw, measuring tape, Kreg pocket hole jig, and clamps.
Extras: Frog hinges and push-to-open latches for locking.
Step 1: Plan and Measure
Before cutting any wood, measure the available space in your van. Our bench was designed to fit the window side of the van, measuring approximately 40 inches for the main bench and 27 inches for the table section. The bench will also serve as a convertible seating area with storage underneath.
Step 2: Build the Frame
We started by cutting 2x2s for the bench frame. Straight cuts are essential for structural stability, so using a circular saw for precision is highly recommended. Assemble the frame using wood screws and wood glue, and check for alignment as you go.
Step 3: Adjust for Setbacks
Van builds rarely go smoothly, and we ran into issues with uneven cuts when initially assembling the frame. This led to a slightly crooked structure that wouldn’t sit flush against the wall. To fix this, we re-cut the pieces and added a plywood backing to secure the bench to the van’s wall for extra stability. Mistakes are part of the learning curve—don’t get discouraged!
Step 4: Install Plywood Panels
Once the frame was solid, we measured, cut, and attached ¾-inch birch plywood to the sides and top of the bench. This creates a polished look and adds support. Don’t forget to account for wiring or outlets—mark and drill any necessary holes before attaching the panels.
Step 5: Add Hardware and Finishing Touches
We installed black 12-inch hinges to create a top access door for the bench’s storage compartment. We’ll eventually add to ensure safety when lifting and closing the bench as well.
Key Tips for Success
Document Everything: Record your build process with photos or videos. We found this invaluable when we needed to locate wiring behind walls.
Measure Twice, Cut Once: Precision is key to avoiding crooked frames or ill-fitting panels.
Be Flexible: Mistakes will happen. Approach them as opportunities to learn and improve your skills.
What’s Next?
With the bench frame complete, the next step is to upholster the seating area for added comfort and style. We’re also going to build the kitchen table as well as the other seat which will hold the composting toilet. Stay tuned as we share more updates on our van conversion journey, including the final touches on this multi-functional bench.
Final Thoughts
Building a bench with storage is a rewarding project that adds functionality and style to your camper van. Whether you're using it as a dining area, workspace, or cozy couch, this feature will undoubtedly enhance your van life experience.
